Krewe of Demeter History
The Krewe of Demeter was formerly organized on March 18, 2015 with the charter membership cutoff being fixed as April 15, 2015 with 37 Charter members, 1 Associate member and 1 Honorary member for a total membership of 39 members in the inaugural year of the Krewe. A Charter Member is anyone who became a member of the Krewe on or before April 15, 2015 and who has remained a member of the Krewe without a lapse in membership since that date. Lora Evans and John Evans are the surviving charter members.
DeSoto Parish has historically been an agrarian economy heavily based upon farming, ranching and forestry which is why Demeter, the Goddess of Harvest and Agriculture, was selected as our Krewe name.
Danny Procell and Julie Morris proposed the formation of a Mardi Gras Krewe in Mansfield, Louisiana. Danny contacted various business and government leaders in Mansfield about his plan including Mayor Curtis McCoy who was supportive.
The initial meeting to form a Krewe was held at the Clista Calhoun building with approximately twenty attendees. The Northwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association (the Krewe of Krewes) was discussed along with what was required for admittance as a member of the association. It was agreed the Krewe of Demeter would strive to join the association and was ultimately successful in gaining full membership. Requirements of membership in the association is to have a Coronation Bal, Bal and Parade each Mardi Gras season and perform community service along with other technical membership requirements such as maintaining a minimum member level.
